Richmond's Turner eyes World Cup final glory
9:11am Thursday 2nd September 2010
Richmond’s Amy Turner only has eyes for the Women’s World Cup final as England look to make it third time lucky at the weekend and lift the crown for the first time in 16 years.
The Epsom-born 26-year-old starred as head coach Gary Street’s team eased past Australia 15-0 in Wednesday night’s semi-final at the Stoop to reach Sunday’s showpiece where they will face New Zealand.
It is the third time in succession England have faced the Black Ferns in the World Cup final with the previous two meetings ending in defeat for this year’s host nation.
And Turner, who started her rugby career with Kingston Rugby Club, was only too pleased to get the chance to gain revenge as her team bids to repeat last November’s 10-3 Twickenham Test triumph over the Kiwis.
“I’m feeling really good about the game,” she said.
“We played some awesome rugby and we played the tactics we wanted to play and we’d discussed before the game.
“There are bits to work on as always, but I’m glad to have got that win under the belt and now I’m just thinking about New Zealand in the final.”
Turner’s Richmond team-mate Alice Richardson added a late penalty to tries from skipper Catherine Spencer and Danielle Waterman, to complete an emphatic.
The pair - along with clubmates Emma Croker, Rachael Burford, La Toya Mason, Becky Essex and Fiona Pocock - will now be in line for a cup final appearance against the Black Ferns who dispatched France 45-7 earlier in the day.
